Sam kya kahega? (What will Sam say?)

Dr. Seuss is a world renowned children's author. Of late, Sameer has really started enjoying quite a few books by Dr. Seuss. They all rhyme and since Sameer is really into rhyming words these days, he loves to read them over and over again. One of his favorites is: Green Eggs and Ham. This book is a best seller of Dr. Seuss and no wonder why. Give it a read and you will understand. It's funny, simple to understand and really makes for good reading for a small child.

The storyline goes like this: a person who is busy doing his own thing gets interrupted by Sam. Sam wants him to eat the green eggs and ham that he has brought for his friend. That person keeps saying no to Sam, but Sam does not give up. He keeps following his friend and finally persists in making him try those green eggs and ham. Guess what, Sam's friend realizes that he loves those Green eggs and ham.

Sameer was so influenced by this book and that he would keep using this lesson in everything he would do, especially when he would say no to something. This was not just for food, but any activity that he was not so interested in. So he might be saying no initially to going out as he did not want to leave what he was doing at the moment, while Rahul or I would be trying to coax him, and then amazingly he would himself say, "Sam kya kahega?," and actually agree to leave his activity in the middle and go with us.

Now, even we have taken to saying, "Sam kya kahega?" to Sameer and to each other :-)

Hip Circles and Leg raises

When I was pregnant with Sameer, I had joined a prenatal exercise class. After that I also purchased a DVD of the Perfect Pregnancy Workout. (I know, that woman looks in amazing shape, something I never even bothered to try for during pregnancy, just enough to keep going) They both taught me these two exercises which I have used a lot more in this pregnancy compared to the last: hip circles and leg raises. Both in my last one and this one I used to have so much tiredness and pain in my hips and legs from just lying in bed all night, it was impossible to get a full night's sleep. These two exercises have let me sleep much better in this pregnancy as compared to my last one with Sameer.

Lie down on your right side first. Put the right arm under your head and use the left arm for support in front of the belly. Fold both the legs at the knee and raise the left knee in the air. Circle it in one direction 7-10 times and then circle it in the opposite direction. Make the circles as wide as possible.

Next comes the leg raises. Bring your left leg down. Straighten it and then raise it as high as you can. Remember not to overstretch as it is easy to do so in pregnancy. Raise the leg up and down. Repeat this action for about 3-4 minutes. Then cross your left leg over so it is sitting in front of your belly. Hold the ankle with your left arm. Now straighten the right leg and start raising the right leg a few inches above the ground. You will feel a stretch in your inner thigh muscle. Bring the right leg up slowly and then bring it back down. Repeat for a minute or so. Then, raise the right leg faster a few times, 5-10 times, depending on your stamina. At the last raise, hold the right leg in the air and count to five.

Now turn over to lie on your left side. Bring the left arm under your head, the right arm in front of your belly to support yourself from rolling over, fold the legs and raise your right knee in the air. Circle the knee, first in one direction and then the other direction. Once finished, straighten your right leg and raise it up and down. Next cross it over to bring it in front of your belly and hold it with your right arm at the ankle, raise your left leg up and down, first slowly and then faster. Finally hold it still in the air for a count of five.

I started doing these in the night whenever I woke up due to painful hips and legs. I would keep lying in bed, do these exercises and would feel so much better that I had no problems falling back to sleep right away. Of course, when in doubt, you should always consult your OBGYN or midwife to make sure that it is safe for you to do.
