Whole Wheat Tortillas

Last week we had burritos for dinner. I used leftover rajma and pulao for the stuffing. We haven't been able to find any tortillas so far in NOIDA, so I looked up a recipe for the dough online. It was a really simple recipe, perfect for a last minute weekday dinner. We have a Kitchenaid mixer at home which is great for kneading doughs. That made it even easier. The link for the tortilla recipe is as follows:

I used ghee (clarified butter) instead of lard. Since there was no maida at home (all purpose flour), I used whole wheat flour. I did have to use a bit more water than what was given in the recipe. I must have used approximately 1 & 1/4 cup; the recipe calls for 1 cup water with 3 cups flour. Also my tortillas were thicker than the ones you find in the store as my tawa would not allow any bigger. But they tasted so good, specially when they were warm; much better than anything we have bought from the store in the States atleast. Really made the effort worthwhile. With the amount of ghee in it, I'm sure anything would taste good. But it's something that we could definitely try again on a weekday with leftover veggies and lots of cheese :-) One thing to keep in mind are some of the cooking tips that are given after the corn tortilla recipe. Next time, I'll try to take a picture of my tortillas and add it here.

oh yes, do add the picture when you can. would love to see how they looked. Since I have seen the long list of additives on the tortilla packages, I have stopped buying them. you basically loose your apptite, although I could imagine that in the US you also get the "short life" tortillas without all those things, as they are eaten more often maybe.
Hope Smeer get well soon.
love to him and a Happy new Year 2009 to the three of you!
