A great sports weekend

Weekend of October 20-21st has to go down as probably the best sporting weekend for me, in terms of how many of my favorite teams won.
  1. Our Indian cricket team beat the mighty Aussies in the Twenty20 game. Here's the scorecard.
  2. The Boston Red Sox made it to the World Series again -- second time in the last four years. This time they came back from a 3 games to 1 deficit to convincingly beat the Cleveland Indians 3 in a row. Quite an accomplishment for a team which was apparently cursed by the Babe. Here are the boxscores of the two weekend games: Game 6 and Game 7.
  3. The New England Patriots made news out of easy game with Miami. They beat them easily with a score of 49-28, behind 6 TD passes from Tom Brady. Randy Moss caught 2 of those. Here is the boxscore.

Thanks Ma

Like most parents of newborns, I dread trimming Sameer's fingernails and toenails. When he was born, everyone complimented us on his beautiful long fingers and nails. In the last seven months though, I have reduced his fingernails to almost half their original length. Initially, I tried waiting till they were really long before trimming them, but he kept scratching and hurting himself. It was especially scary when we would see a scratch near his eyes. So each time, I ended up trimming a bit more. Most people tell me that he inherits his fingers from me. I inherit mine from my dad. So thanks Appa. However, I have to thank my mom for keeping my nails also long to match my fingers. I never thought about it, but now I realise she made sure that she did not overtrim them through my childhood.

I have finally settled onto a pair of nail scissors from American Red Cross for trimming Sameer's nails. Plus I like baby nail files. Sameer's dadi suggested that I try to peel his nails. It did work sometimes, but not very successfully. Might work for some people, so worth a try. Another suggestion I read in the Parenting magazine was to nibble them. I haven't tried this one yet, but it might just work.

Healthy Avocados

Ruchi and I are so fond of avocados these days. They are not only convenient to prepare, but are super healthy. They are rich in proteins and fats, but low in carbohydrates. They usually find a way in our weekday breakfasts. When sliced and with tomatoes they make an excellent weekday breakfast sandwich. Sliced avocados, along with mushrooms and onions make a great omelet topping.
Lately, we have started to give
Sameer, our 7 month old, some mashed avocado as well and he too enjoyed it. Its a great food for babies since it packs a lot of calories in a small serving and it provides essential nutrients like unsaturated fats and also provides iron.

Pouches

Sameer loves his pouch. We bought it for him when he was 2 months, from the owner of a website called QuirkyBaby. Jane, the owner, helped me learn to use the pouch and sent me some more tips and tricks later as well. Everytime I put him in that pouch he looked completely cocooned up. It used to make me nervous, but he would calm down and enjoy the ride -- everytime. We were using it till last month. Now I like to use the BabyBjorn carrier that his Preeti mausi sent us, as its a two-shoulder carrier. He has enough neck control that I can have him face outside. Here are some pics of his in the pouch and the carrier. Although I have to admit, in the first photo, I've not placed him in properly. I realized that later when I saw the instructions video in the Hotslings DVD.

First Tooth

Sameer's first tooth started coming shortly after he turned five months. It wasn't an easy time for him. He had fever, diarrhea, felt miserable. He used to bite me during breastfeeds all the time. Its been okay since then. But he just looks so cute with his one tooth now.
